- Intense fight with both fighters landing plenty of leather. In the twelth round, Olivares lands a hard punch and Arguello stumbles back as if he was hurt. Either Arguello recovered quickly, or he played possum. Either way, Olivares went for broke trying to knock his man out. He spent every ounce of energy he had left trying to knock Arguello out, but was unsuccessful, and he was very burnt out. In the 13th, Arguello dropped Olivares with a short left-uppercut. Olivares got up, signaled he was ready to fight, and the fight continued. Shortly after, Olivares found himself pummeled, and then finished off by “El Flaco Explosivo” (Explosive Thin Man).

Años después, visitando Nicaragua atendiendo invitación de Alexis, un Olivares calmo, frío y pensante, reconoció que fue una temeridad imperdonable haber decidido retar el poder de Alexis en aquel round trece. “Sí, fue una imprudencia no buscar como amarrar, como escapar, como enfriar, como salir de la línea de fuego, como recuperar control mental y muscular para volver a arremeter en los dos últimos asaltos”, dijo Rubén mientras los tres cenábamos en un restaurante capitalino.
Edgard Tijerino: ¿Creíste que Alexis, supuestamente atravesando por el desgaste, ya no tenía la suficiente dinamita?
Rubén Olivares: “No fue eso. Como estaba manejando el combate y había asimilado sus mejores golpes, creí que podía noquear. Me sentí atraído hacia el cambio de golpes porque mis puños estaban funcionando con velocidad, poder y puntería y entre las brasas, podía golpearlo con más solidez”.
Edgard Tijerino: “Un leve descuido” ¿Llegaste a tener algún indicio sobre la izquierda que venía zumbando, o solo sentiste el arponazo?
Rubén Olivares: “Fue un leve descuido. Giré buscando como combinar una derecha arriba con una izquierda abajo, cuando sentí el impacto en el hígado. Fue uno de esos golpes que obligan a cualquiera, por muy curtido y valiente que sea, a gritar “ay mamita”, pero no lo hice, solo me derrumbé… No pude evitarlo”.
Edgard Tijerino: ¿Qué tan consciente estabas cuando te levantaste?
Rubén Olivares: “Siempre estuve lúcido, pero el dolor por el impacto permanecía, y decidí esperar un poco.”
Edgard Tijerino: ¿Qué dijo el “Cuyo” sobre tu insistencia suicida de arrimarte al toro, sin capa ni espada?
Rubén Olivares: “El Cuyo gritó, el Chilero también, pero no estaba para escuchar nada, solo interesado en seguir lo que me dictara el instinto. Y fui a fondo, como todo gallo bravo. Creí estar en condiciones de responder consistentemente, pero Alexis sacó una gran fortaleza de sus reservas y golpeó destructivamente. Vi que estaba metido en líos, busqué cómo salir, pero fue imposible. Alexis estaba claro que si no definía en ese momento, estaba perdido”.
