Comentarios:
- Alexis Arguello makes the first defense of his WBC Lightweight Championship against undefeated warrior Ray Mancini. Mancini gets the jump on Arguello, winning the first half of the fight on work rate. The champion comes back, however, and begins catching Mancini with flush shots in the seventh round. At the end of the twelfth, Mancini walks into a huge right hand that puts his knee on the canvas. Although he bounces back up and continues through a hard thirteenth round, Mancini gets dropped into the ropes by a pair of left hooks and a right hand in the fourteenth. The valiant Mancini again gets back to his feet, but Referee Tony Perez has already decided to stop the fight.
- The twenty-year-old Mancini entered the fight ranked No. 3 at lightweight by the WBC.
- More than 500 fans from Mancini’s hometown of Youngstown, Ohio, attended the fight.
- After ten rounds, one judge had Arguello ahead, one had Mancini ahead and the third had the fight even.
- Mancini was floored by a right at the end of the twelfth round.
- Arguello floored Mancini with another right in round fourteen as referee Tony Perez stepped in to stop the fight.
- This was Mancini’s first defeat after twenty consecutive wins.
