Pío de Jesus Pico (1801-1894)
Pío Pico fue el último gobernador de California mexicana. Tenía ascendencia africana, indígena y española. Nació en San Gabriel en 1801 y residió allí hasta la muerte de su padre en 1819; luego se trasladó a San Diego. No está claro cómo llegó a ser gobernador de California en 1845.
Pico no pudo cambiar el destino de California mexicana antes de su muerte en Los Ángeles en 1894. La historiadora Jessie E. Bromilow afirma: ‘[Pico] quedó atrapado en el torbellino de la conquista estadounidense’. Hizo lo mejor que pudo en tiempos excepcionalmente difíciles para California mexicana.
